Drunken Man Causes Plane to Land at Shannon Airport

A forty seven year old German national caused a plane travelling from Frankfurt to the Dominican Republic to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport due to drunken behavior. He appeared at Clare District Court on May 15th.

There were 263 people on board the plane. The plane had just left Irish airspace but the pilot made the decision to return to Shannon Airport due to the behavior of four passengers. Cabin crew alerted the Pilot to the issue and requested an emergency landing.

The authorities at Shannon Airport were called and were ready and waiting to deal with the offenders upon arrival. For safety reasons fuel had to be dumped to ensure a safe landing. After circling Shannon Airport for thirty minutes the plane finally landed at half four.

A German man was taken to Shannon Garda station and charged under Section 2A of the Air Navigation and Transport Act. Statements were taken from all crew members by the authorities. The man was fined just one hundred euro and was then released. The plane took off again after thirty minutes.

Car Hire Firm Closes

It’s a tough time in the travel industry for many people at the moment. After a year of casualties the latest to bite the dust is Local Contract Hire and Leasing Ltd located in Leeds.

The firm was one the biggest independent car hire companies in the United Kingdom. A recent announcement from Pricewaterhouse Coopers stated that the firm had gone into administration meaning a loss of two hundred jobs. The firm also traded as 1car1.

Now all eight hundred staff will be made redundant. One hundred and eight members of staff were based at head office in Leeds while the rest of the staff were split up between eighty seven countrywide locations.

It was hoped that the company could be saved and a buyer would come forward however once this failed to happen asset striping began to take place which included a car hire fleet of fifteen thousand cars.

The administrators expressed shock and regret at the collapse of the company. 1car1 experienced steady growth over a five year period but the recent credit crunch caused major problems for the company.

Public Look to Car Hire Sites for Holiday Information

Recent research has shown that the majority of people online in the UK are using travel “all in one” sites such as Expedia and Last Minute when it comes to searching for holiday information.

The sample was taken from seven hundred and fifty users between the ages of twenty and seventy four. Almost eighty percent of participants were online.

Thirty seven percent used major holiday sites such as Expedia while price comparison sites such as travel supermarket were the next most popular option at thirty one percent with reviews sites such as Tripadvisor coming in just a little less at thirty percent.

Car hire sites proved more popular than blogs who polled just seven percent among the participants. Not sure where that leaves us here at Shannon Airport Car Hire as of course we are a car hire site and a blog :-)

Price comparison sites such as ourselves proved most popular among younger users while older people opted for more well known brand sites. Twenty percent said they would be holidaying in Spain this summer while fifteen percent opted for the USA and thirty three percent would be staying within the UK.

Forty percent admitted to often waiting until the last minute to book.
